The epicenter of scientific ideas

19.04.2019

In recent years, dozens of factories have been built in Kazakhstan with investments of more than 3.5 billion dollars. Their activities are based on technologies developed by the National Center for Integrated Processing of Mineral Raw Materials. Interestingly, the technologies of Kazakhstani scientists are already being actively borrowed by many foreign enterprises. The latest scientific developments in the industries were discussed at a briefing at the Ministry of Industry and Infrastructure Development.

As noted by Kanat BAITOV, Acting Chairman of the Committee for Industrial Development and Industrial Safety of the IIR, the mining and metallurgical industry makes up a significant part of the national economy, since Kazakhstan, as you know, is famous for having a rich raw material base. However, these raw materials are characterized as complex, low-concentration, and difficult to enrich. In this regard, mining and metallurgical enterprises are always faced with the challenges of creating new technologies.

The main generator of scientific ideas for the development of the country's industrial complex is the RSE “National Center for Integrated Processing of Mineral Raw Materials" (NCCPS). This company is engaged in solving state tasks of industrial and innovative development of the country, including the preservation and expansion of sources of mineral raw materials and ensuring the complexity of its processing to obtain new products for Kazakhstani production.

Abdurasul ZHARMENOV, Director General of the NCCPS, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor, twice winner of the State Prize of Kazakhstan in the field of science and technology, spoke about new technologies in this industry. According to him, in the field of mining, in recent years, the technology of underground mining of ore from the Maleevsky mine has been created, which is subsequently processed at the Zyryanovsky processing plant. The technology of mill preparation of a high-density filler mixture from waste from mining, metallurgical and fuel industries can be deservedly attributed to the advanced. This development has been implemented at the Tishinsky, Ridder-Sokolny, Maleevsky, Orlovsky, Artemyevsky and Pervomaisky mines.

The Voskhod-Oriel LLP mine has successfully implemented an automated positioning system for personnel and self-propelled vehicles.

By the way, the technologies developed at NCPMS are being implemented not only at domestic enterprises, but also in Russia. For example, our neighbors have already adopted an automated corporate management system for a geotechnological complex in open-source developments called Jetygara.

World-class results have been achieved in the field of non-ferrous, rare and precious metals technology. For example, an upgraded oxygen-suspended electrothermal melting process has been created on the basis of NCCPS. This development has now been implemented in Canada, Italy and China. It allows the production of 420 thousand tons of primary lead per year, which is one tenth of the global output of this metal. At the same time, the unique technologies developed in Kazakhstan for processing hard-to-enrich gold-bearing raw materials have been successfully implemented in Russia, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and China. The high efficiency of these developments is confirmed by such leading companies of the world as Barrick Gold, Newmont and Placer Dome.

- Industrial production of the alloy has been mastered at the Ligas Gerais Eletrometalgia Ltda plant in Brazil. The construction of the first stage of the ferroalloy plant in Tash-Kumyr (Kyrgyzstan) is underway in close cooperation with Thyssen Krupp (Germany) and POSCO (South Korea). Commercialization of the project is also underway in Iran. Our technologies are used on all continents, from Antarctica to North America. Among them are such countries as Canada, Brazil, Italy, Bolivia, China, Russia, Ukraine, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan," Abdurasul Zharmenov emphasized.

There are a number of serious developments in the field of ferrous metallurgy. For example, a technology has been created for processing low-quality lignite ores from the Lisakovsky deposit, which for the first time in the world allowed us to obtain a conditioned concentrate. In the arsenal of achievements of NCCPS scientists, there is also a technology for smelting high-alloy steel of the X80 strength category.

As Zharmenov noted, a third of Kazakhstan's gold is produced using gold technologies from the National Center for Integrated Processing of Mineral Raw Materials. The national center has accumulated extensive experience in extracting metals such as vanadium, titanium, niobium, antimony, rhenium, osmium-187, molybdenum, and tungsten from mineral and man-made raw materials in the form of concentrates, chemical compounds, and metals. The technology of processing Karatau quartzites to produce ammonium metavanadate has been introduced on an industrial scale. And the technology of osmium-187 production developed by NCCPS scientists allowed Kazakhstan to enter the top three countries producing stable isotopes.

In recent years, the scientists of the national center have been actively involved in the process of commercializing the results of scientific and scientific-technical activities carried out under the auspices of JSC “Science Foundation". Dozens of plants and factories with investments of more than $3.5 billion have been built in different parts of the world based on scientific and technical developments of the NCCPS. The annual output of marketable products at these enterprises exceeds $4 billion at current prices. Several technologies are also being commercialized in Kazakhstan and abroad. The total amount of investments in new production facilities based on these technologies in the next two years will amount to more than $ 2 billion.
