The Ministry of Economy and Antimonopoly Policy of the Kyrgyz Republic hosted a meeting between Minister Temir Sariev and representatives of the South Korean metallurgical company Posco. This was announced on May 25 by the press service of the Ministry of Economy.
During the meeting, Posco expressed interest in expanding the ferroalloy plant in Tash-Kumyr and in building a magnesium plant using ferrosilicon aluminum for deoxidation, in a project to modernize hydroelectric power plants for the implementation of two previous business projects, in the development of rare earth element projects and other possible business projects: aluminum, copper.
Minister T.Sariev welcomed Posco's position and expressed his willingness to provide support in the implementation of the above-mentioned project. This will provide an opportunity to develop the mining industry and improve infrastructure in the country, he said.
To date, the Mayor's office of Tash-Kumyr has allocated a land plot of 26.5 hectares for the construction of the plant. In April 2011, construction began, and on May 17, a capsule was laid in the foundation of the plant, with the participation of government members, representatives of the RSE "National Center for Integrated Processing of Mineral Raw Materials of the Republic of Kazakhstan" and Thyssen Krupp Metallurgie GmbH. Construction and installation works for 11.7 million soms were completed. The first set of equipment, consisting of a melting furnace worth $2.7 million, was delivered to Tash-Kumyr.
