Abdrasul ZHARMENOV, General Director of the National Center for Integrated Processing of Mineral Raw Materials, Doctor of Technical Sciences

The President of the country has identified innovation as a strategic task of the state. Even today, scientific organizations and universities in the country are actively developing new breakthrough projects.

The main goal of the modern development of the mining and metallurgical complex, defined by the head of state and reflected in the State Program of accelerated Industrial and Innovative Development of Kazakhstan, is the modernization of the industry aimed at strategic re-equipment of production. The main activities of the National Center for Integrated Processing of Mineral Raw Materials are the development, implementation, transfer of technologies and creation of innovative industries. Today, the National Center, together with leading research institutes and mining and metallurgical enterprises, is the largest scientific and production enterprise in Kazakhstan. The organization employs over 1,300 people.

The National Center was one of the first to set a course for the implementation of innovative activities. The Center performs fundamental and applied research in the field of mining and development of mineral deposits of ferrous, non-ferrous, rare and precious metals, non-metallic and chemical raw materials, rational extraction and efficient enrichment of natural resources, complex chemical and metallurgical processing of raw materials, modernizes the mining and metallurgical complex, creating a scientific and technical base for the development of leading enterprises industries.

Scientists of the National Center actively cooperate with domestic and foreign mining and metallurgical enterprises. Using the technologies of the Center's scientists and subsidiaries, various industrial facilities have been created and are being created both in our country and outside the state. For many years, one of the most famous developments that has gained worldwide recognition has been the technology of processing lead-containing raw materials, which has been used to build and operate factories on different continents, for example, in Bolivia, Italy and Canada. A technology has also been developed for processing materials of complex composition: lead-silver, lead-copper-zinc concentrates and oxidized raw materials. The successful experience of implementing the method abroad allows us to recommend it for efficient, environmentally friendly processing of lead-containing raw materials in Kazakhstan.

According to our technologies, zinc plants have been built in Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan, a new zinc plant is being built in Russia, and gold mining plants in China, Russia, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan.

An illustrative example of the sustainable implementation of innovation activities by the National Center and the recognition of its work at the international level is the creation of the Kazakhstansky alloy for deoxidation and alloying of steel, protected by patents from Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Russia, Kyrgyzstan, as well as a patent from the European Union. The main form of innovation promotion, called technology transfer, has been implemented through the transfer of an invention patent to the largest high-tech metallurgical company ThyssenKrupp Metallurgie GmbH with partners.

A technology for producing high–purity silicon from agricultural waste, rice husk, is being developed. The National Center has developed a technology that makes it possible to produce different types of commercial magnesium products – magnesium sulfate, magnesium oxide and metallic magnesium in ingots. The demand for these products in Kazakhstan is quite high, and the field of use is diverse. Magnesium sulfate is used in agriculture, magnesium oxide is used in the rubber industry. Metallic magnesium is essential in metallurgy. The motor and automotive industries can be considered as promising industries for the use of metallic magnesium. Our scientists have found new technological solutions for the manufacture of new generation refractory materials from local raw materials based on self-propagating high-temperature synthesis technology.

The synthesized refractory materials are not inferior in quality, and in some respects they surpass the refractory materials of foreign manufacturers who supply their products to our factories. The creation of the production of refractory materials using the proposed technology will significantly reduce their cost and provide metallurgical plants with products with high performance characteristics.

This incomplete review of the results of the work of the scientists of the National Center indicates a fairly high potential of the enterprise. And we will make every effort to solve the tasks set by the President of the country in order to contribute to the development of the economy of Kazakhstan with our significant achievements.
