Production of refined ferromanganese has been established

A naturally abnormal event occurred in the branch of the RSE "NCCMS RK" Chemical and Metallurgical Institute named after J. Abishev

December 24, 2020 is a significant day in the history of the RSE "National Center for Integrated Processing of Mineral Raw Materials of the Republic of Kazakhstan" (hereinafter - RSE "NCPMS RK"). An event took place, which one of the oldest employees of the branch of the RSE "NCCMS RK" Chemical and Metallurgical Institute named after J. Abishev (hereinafter – KHMI), described as naturally abnormal. Why? About this – below!

It is no secret that plants and factories have been built and operate in different parts of the world based on the developments of the RSE "NCCMS RK" and its branches. This time, for the first time in the history of KHMI, its own production was created based on its own design. This is the production of refined ferromanganese, the income from which will cover 25-30% of the financial needs of the institute.

The project was implemented as part of commercialization by JSC Science Foundation, but the RSE NC KPMS RK also acted as a co-investor. At the opening, Deputy Chairman of the Science Foundation JSC Bakhytzhan Sarkeev noted that: "Today we are launching a unique production facility. We will be able to create new jobs. The company has great prospects. I wish that the products were in demand not only within the country, but also exported!"

In his welcoming speech, Abdurasul Zharmenov, General Director of the RSE NCCMS RK, Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan, twice winner of the State Prize of the Republic of Kazakhstan, drew the attention of those present that about 2 million tons of ferroalloys are produced in Kazakhstan. However, this production is truly unique, since refined low-carbon ferromanganese is not produced anywhere. He particularly noted the successful cooperation between the RSE "NC KPMS RK" and JSC "Science Foundation". The Center is implementing 4 projects with the support of the Science Foundation JSC, of which this is the second launch of a new production facility. Thanks to the creation of such production facilities, the Center has the opportunity to develop new technologies. "We are a scientific organization. I don't want our scientists to turn into industrialists. However, thanks to the commercialization of such projects, we will have more freedom to create and implement new scientific ideas for the benefit of the country, for the benefit of the people of Kazakhstan," concluded A.Zharmenov.

"This work dates back to Soviet times," said Alibek Baysanov, a young scientist, head of the projector, Candidate of Technical Sciences. – However, no one has managed to reach the industrial level yet. Our plant includes two furnaces of 630 kVA and 250 kVA for the production of recycled and refined metal, respectively. The annual output of refined ferromanganese at full capacity will reach 500 tons." "As we accumulate funds, we will increase production," said the director of the KHMI named after Zh. Abisheva, the laureate of the State Prize of the Republic of Kazakhstan in the field of science, technology and education Sailaubai Baysanov. "We have trained staff, operators, and HMI employees will also work in production."

Baysanov, whose scientific views were formed under the guidance of Academician E.A. Buketova, emphasizing the symbolism of the opening of an exceptional production during the celebration of the 70th anniversary of the hero of the day.

Since all participants in offline and online formats noted the talent of the director of KHMI S. Baysanov not only as a scientist, but also as a teacher who created a school of ferro-alloy workers, Zhanibek Nurmukhanbetov, Head of Technology Implementation Service at TNK Kazchrome JSC, Candidate of Technical Sciences, and Askhat Akuov, technological engineer, spoke on behalf of the grateful students. ERG Capital Projects, Candidate of Technical Sciences, both representatives of the Aktobe Ferroalloy Plant. Yesterday's students, now well-known industry workers, noting the significance of the event, recalled with special warmth the years spent at KHMI, their mentors, thanks to whom they now occupy responsible positions in the metallurgical industry of the country.

The congratulations of the management and teams of the KHMI named after Zh. Abishev and the RSE "NCCMS RK" as a whole were joined by the directors of the branches of the GNPOPE "Kazmehanobr" S. Shalgimbayev, the Astana branch B.Satbayev, the Metallurgy Center E. Beisembayev.

The ceremony dedicated to the launch of the production of a new ferroalloy was called a continuation of work by the elders of the KHMI – laureates of the State Prize of the Republic of Kazakhstan in the field of science and technology V. Malyshev, A. Akberdin and S. Isabayev, as ferroalloy plants are already operating using KHMI technologies. However, according to V. Malyshev, the creation of our own production of refined ferromanganese is significant and contradictory, natural and at the same time anomalous. It is natural because it is based on fundamental knowledge of the physico–chemical foundations of phase equilibria in complex heterogeneous metallurgical systems, which ensures its reliability. It is anomalous because, in principle, it should not have been, because previously this activity was carried out at least by a scientific institute, a design institute and the production itself. Now all these functions have been performed by the staff of the KHMI. Production has been created!

In his closing speech, S. Baysanov thanked the teams of the Abishev KHMI, the RSE NCCMS RK, and the Science Foundation JSC, without whose cohesive activities today's launch would not have been possible, especially at a time when the whole world is paralyzed due to the spread of the COVID-19 virus. He congratulated all the participants of the event on the upcoming New Year and wished them good health and new successes!
