For the first time, an alloy for improving steel was obtained in Kazakhstan

25.12.2020

For the first time in Kazakhstan, the production of refined grades of ferromanganese has begun, which improve the quality of steel, BaigeNews reports.kz with reference to the press service of JSC "Science Foundation".

Industrial smelting of ferroalloy products began on December 24, 2020 in Karaganda. The project was implemented by scientists of the Chemical and Metallurgical Institute named after J. Abishev within the framework of the commercialization grant "Organization of production of refined ferromanganese varieties".

The project partners were JSC "Science Foundation" and RSE "National Center for Integrated Processing of Mineral Raw Materials of the Republic of Kazakhstan".

The technology developed by scientists of the Abishev Chemical Engineering Institute is unique, resource-saving and has no analogues in the world.

"The innovative approach makes it possible to obtain higher quality products with low energy consumption using unclaimed depleted manganese ore and high-ash coal. A special feature of the technology for the production of refined ferromanganese is the use of cheaper and more effective aluminosilicon manganese as a reducing agent," the report says.

The planned production capacity will be 350-400 tons of alloys per year. The new production facility will provide a 30 percent reduction in imports of refined grades of ferromanganese to the Republic of Kazakhstan.

The company has 40 permanent jobs.

Kazakhstan's demand for refined manganese alloys is 1,500 tons per year.

After reaching full capacity, the bulk of the products are planned to be exported to the CIS countries and China. To date, more than 63 tons of alloy have been sold to consumers.

"Within the framework of the project, several furnaces and crushing and screening equipment have been built, which will allow producing a wide range of ferroalloy products. To date, Kazakhstan's MMC has not produced refined grades of ferromanganese, which are used to strengthen the strength of steel products in the defense industry," the press release says.
